How to Start Your Own Supplement Brand in the UK
Starting your own supplement brand in the UK no longer needs a factory, a formulator or tens of thousands of pounds. With a white label supplier, you choose proven products, put your own brand on them and start selling, then grow from there. This guide walks through the steps in order, with the real minimums, lead times and legal points you need to know.
Step 1: Decide who you are selling to
Successful supplement brands start with a clear customer, not a product list. Gym-goers, runners, busy professionals, people who want a cleaner morning routine: each group wants different products and responds to different branding. Pick one audience and build your first range around them. You can widen it later.
Step 2: Choose proven products
The fastest way to launch is with products customers already understand and search for. Our base range is complete and ready to sell:
- Creatine monohydrate
- Bovine collagen (hydrolysed, grass-fed) and marine collagen (hydrolysed, wild-caught)
- Electrolytes
- Matcha (Japanese, ceremonial grade)
- BCAA 2:1:1 and L-glutamine
- Plant proteins: pea, soya and faba bean protein in 900g tubs
We do not currently offer bespoke formulation, capsules or tablets. If you need a unique formula, start with a proven product to build your customer base, then develop your own later.
Step 3: Pick a format and know the minimums
Your format decides your minimum order and how your product looks on the shelf:
- Tubs: the lowest-risk way to start, with prices per tub shown on each product page. Plant proteins start from 10 tubs per product.
- Printed pouches: a minimum of 700, which can be split into five products of 140 each, so you can launch a range rather than one product. How split-run pouches work.
- Stick packs: a minimum of 5,000, which can be five products of 1,000 each. Ideal for trial packs and on-the-go use. How split-run sachets work.
Step 4: Try before you commit
Order sample pots of the products you are considering, so you can check taste, texture and how they mix before you build a brand around them.
Step 5: Build your brand and label
Your label is where your brand lives, and it also carries legal information. When you order, we send you the label template for your product. If you need help with the design, you can choose an introduction to a designer at checkout.
A UK food supplement label must include, among other things: the name of the food and the words "food supplement", the ingredients with allergens emphasised, the recommended daily dose and a warning not to exceed it, the statement that supplements should not replace a varied diet, a storage instruction, the net quantity, a best-before date and batch reference, and the name and UK address of the business responsible.
Be careful with claims. You can only make health claims that appear on the GB register of authorised nutrition and health claims, and only for products that meet the conditions of that claim. "Supports joints" or "boosts immunity" on a collagen label, for example, is not permitted. As the brand owner, you are legally responsible for what your label says, so check it properly before printing.
Step 6: Register your food business
Selling supplements makes you a food business. In the UK you need to register with your local authority at least 28 days before you start trading. Registration is free. Your local authority or Trading Standards can tell you exactly what applies to you.
Step 7: Order, approve artwork and go
Once you have ordered and your artwork is approved, labels are printed within three working days. When they arrive, we apply them and despatch the next working day. Printed pouches take longer because the packaging itself is printed, so allow at least six weeks from artwork approval.
Every order comes with a Certificate of Conformity showing the results for the actual batch you receive, which is useful for your own records and for marketplaces that ask for documentation.
Step 8: Sell and fulfil
Most new brands start on their own Shopify store, then add Amazon, eBay or TikTok Shop. Packing a handful of orders at the kitchen table is fine at first. As volumes grow, a fulfilment partner can store your stock and ship your orders for you.
Step 9: Grow beyond the starter quantities
When your brand outgrows the quantities on our website, moving to contract packing usually brings the cost per unit down. Book a call and we will talk you through the options.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start a supplement brand?
Much less than most people think if you start with white label tubs. Product prices are shown on each product page, and you can start small and add products as you grow. Budget also for your label design, your website and marketing.
Do I need a licence to sell supplements in the UK?
There is no special licence for food supplements, but you must register as a food business with your local authority and make sure your labels and claims meet UK food law.
Can I create my own formula?
Not with us at the moment. We offer a proven base range of single and simple products. Bespoke formulation is on our roadmap.
How quickly can I launch?
With tubs, labels are printed within three working days of artwork approval and your order is despatched the next working day after they arrive. Printed pouches take at least six weeks.
